Christmas around the World
For this article, we chose to focus on eight cities that feel particularly special during the festive season. In each destination, we highlight hotels and one sight or activity that, for us, captures the atmosphere of Christmas best. Hotels often set the tone at this time of year — through thoughtful decorations, seasonal menus and small traditions. In our opinion they make an essential part of how a city is experienced during the holidays.
Hotel – Ritz Paris
During the festive season, the Ritz Paris embraces classic Christmas traditions. It is the kind of place where stopping for a drink feels as important as staying the night.
Things to do – Ice Skating at Le Grand Palais (see under)
Ice skating under the glass roof of the Grand Palais is a seasonal highlight. An experience set within one of Paris’s most recognisable buildings. Even if you don’t skate, watching from the sidelines is part of the experience.
Things to do – Dior Flagship Store (see under)
Each year, Dior’s flagship store presents a new Christmas façade. A short stop that has become part of a festive city walk — and let’s be honest, a red Lady Dior will always feel right at Christmas.
Hotel – The Connaught
The Connaught approaches Christmas with restraint. A place to return to after a long walk, where the festive mood is felt rather than announced.
Things to do – Annabel’s (see under)
Annabel’s is known for its elaborate Christmas exterior. Even without stepping inside, it has become part of London’s seasonal theatre.
Things to do – Regent Street Christmas Lights (see under)
The Regent Street lights mark the start of Christmas in London. Best seen in the early evening, when the city shifts into night mode.

Vienna’s best-known Christmas market feels rooted in tradition. Take your time here — this is not a place to rush.
Things to do – Stephansplatz Christmas Market (see under)
Located beside St. Stephen’s Cathedral, this market works well as a brief stop. Ideal for warming up between walks.
Hotel – The Plaza Hotel
The Plaza Hotel is closely tied to Christmas in New York. Be Kevin and order the Home Alone room service — including a dessert with sixteen scoops of ice cream. (see under)
Things to do – Rockefeller Christmas Tree
Everybody know the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, but seeing it in person is totally different. Don’t forget to take a selfie.
Things to do – Ice Skating in Central Park
Ice skating in Central Park offers a pause from the city’s pace. Go early in the morning for a quieter experience or in the evening for the full romantic package.

Set on Piazza della Repubblica, Anantara Palazzo Naiadi feels removed from the crowds. A calm place to return to after full winter days.
Things to do – Colosseum Christmas Tree
A Christmas tree near the Colosseum adds a temporary layer to a permanent landmark. Best seen in the early evening.
Things to do – St. Peter’s Square Nativity & Tree
The nativity scene and tree at St. Peter’s Square form part of Rome’s official celebrations. Go late in the day, when the square quiets down.
Hotel – Hotel Sanders
Hotel Sanders feels particularly suited to winter. A place where mornings start slowly and evenings end early.
Things to do – The Nutcracker at the Royal Danish Theatre
Seeing The Nutcracker here is a seasonal ritual. Book ahead — it is part of many locals’ Christmas traditions.
Hotel – Gstaad Palace (see under)
Opened in 1913, Gstaad Palace is one of Switzerland’s most iconic hotels. Positioned above the village, it has long been a gathering place for winter travellers and is amazing during Christmas holidays.
Things to do – Gstaad New Year Music Festival
From the 26th of December until 11th of January the Gstaad New Year Music Festival brings classical performances to intimate alpine venues.
